Police Chiefs Weigh in on Immigration Reform

Officials from Department of Homeland Security recently met with over 100 police chiefs from across the country at a summit to discuss local enforcement of immigration laws.

Officials from Department of Homeland Security recently met with over 100 police chiefs from across the country at a summit to discuss local enforcement of immigration laws, USA Today reports. There was consensus on a few general ideas: that a comprehensive new law including guest-worker programs should be created, that this should include a way for immigrants to become permanent residents, and that laws to forbid the hiring of illegal immigrants should be federally enforced. Police officials stressed the difficulty of dealing with a fragmented immigration system and how it relates to law enforcement. Participants in the forum, as well as other interested parties, are eager to see what policy reform Congress and the Obama administration will come up with.
